Hownsgill Bunkhouse is uniquely situated on the Lydgetts Junction, which is an ideal location from which to explore NCN routes 7 and 14.
Travel east along the Consett to Sunderland C2C route, which is built on one of the country’s oldest railways – the Stanhope to Tyne, and incorporates the delightful Sculpture Trail.
Alternatively the western path, the Waskerley Way, takes you over the fabulous Hownsgill Viaduct with its breath-taking views over valleys and moorland.
Along route 14, the Lanchester Valley (Consett to Durham) allows for 12 miles of easy-going walking or cycling, with picturesque views over open countryside.
The Derwent Walk, on the other hand, passes through the former Steel Works site into a beautifully wooded route towards Swalwell and the largest retail shopping centre in Europe – The Metro Centre.
There are also stamping stations and two cycle shops located in nearby Consett town centre.
